Who Was Helen Keller?
Helen Adams Keller was an author, disability rights advocate, political activist, and lecturer from the United States. She was born in West Tuscumbia, Alabama, and lost her sight and hearing at the age of 19 months due to an illness. She then communicated primarily through home signs until she met her first teacher and lifelong companion Anne Sullivan at the age of seven. Sullivan taught Keller language skills, such as reading and writing. Keller attended Radcliffe College of Harvard University and became the first deafblind person to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree after attending both specialist and mainstream schools. In 1971, Keller was inducted into the Alabama Women’s Hall of Fame. On June 8, 2015, she was one of twelve inaugural inductees into the newly established Alabama Writers Hall of Fame.

Helen Keller, an American author, political activist, and lecturer, died on June 1, 1968, at the age of 87. Keller contracted an illness at the age of 19 months that left her blind and deaf, but with the assistance of Anne Sullivan, a woman who would become her lifelong companion, Keller overcame many obstacles and went on to pass the Radcliffe College admissions examinations at the age of 16. She was the first blind and deaf person to earn a bachelor’s degree when she graduated cum laude in 1904.
Keller campaigned for improved education for the handicapped throughout her life, publishing 14 books on political, social, and educational issues, as well as memoirs and her autobiography. Keller called her home in Easton, Fairfield County, Arcan Ridge, for nearly 30 years. While on one of her many trips abroad in 1946, the house burned down, along with all of its contents and many of her personal papers. Keller lived in an almost identical replica of the original until her death in 1968.

How Many Books Did Helen Keller Write?
Helen Keller was a writer, activist, and educator whose writings and advocacy have had a global impact. She was deaf and blind, but she was able to communicate through touch, sign language, and Braille. She was a very impressive and thoughtful person who saw herself first and foremost as a writer. Helen Keller wrote and published a total of 12 books during her lifetime. Her first book, The Story of My Life, came out in 1903, and her most recent, The Open Door, came out in 1957.

An aeroplane flew from Rome to Paris over the Mediterranean Sea in June 1946. There was nothing unusual about this flight except for one thing: for the first 20 minutes, one of the passengers took over as pilot. Dr. Helen Keller was the passenger, an American author, educator, and activist who had been blind and deaf since childhood. Keller and a friend travelled to Europe to speak on behalf of the American Foundation for the Overseas Blind. Keller took command of the plane during this flight. Interviews with the pilot and crew reveal a woman who is “steadily and calmly” flying a plane.
How Did Helen Keller Fly A Plane?
Keller discovered more opportunities to experience physical freedom as flight technology advanced. In 1931, she was a passenger on a 200-mile (322-kilometer) flight from Newark, New Jersey, to Washington, D.C., which culminated in a meeting with the President of the United States. According to the New York Times, Keller compared the plane to “a great graceful bird sailing through the illimitable skies.”
Keller and her companion Polly Thomson, who translated Keller’s speech to others and spoke to Keller by pressing symbols into her hand, were travelling to Europe on behalf of the American Foundation for the Overseas Blind (and later, India, Africa, and the Middle East). Keller took over the controls of the small plane as it crossed the Mediterranean.
“The ’plane crew were amazed at her sensitive touch on the controls,” Thomson said. “There was no shaking or vibration. She just sat there and flew the’ plane calmly and steadily.”
Did Helen Keller Get Married?
It’s heartbreaking and difficult to comprehend, but in Helen’s day, society believed that women with disabilities should not fall in love or experience any kind of romance, let alone marry. Helen fell deeply in love with Peter Fagan, an ex-newspaper reporter who worked as her secretary, when she was 36, and they secretly engaged. They even got a marriage licence before Helen’s family discovered and forbade them from going any further due to her disabilities. Helen regretted never marrying, later saying, “If I could see, I would marry first and foremost.”
