A Reddit post dubbed the “split face diving accident” online has gone viral on social media. Even though the story and gruesome video were posted 13 years ago, netizens appear to have recently discovered the old post. The story was posted many years ago on Reddit by platform user u/zombiedub. At the time of writing, it had received 93% of the votes. According to reports, the horrific accident involving a 16-year-old Beirut resident occurred in June 2009. A teenager was attempting to dive off the Manara Promenade, directly across from the American University. Unfortunately, the teenager first hit the concrete and then the ocean.
Explaining The TikTok Face Split Diving Trend
TikTok is a diverse church of online content, with viral trends ranging from artificial intelligence filters to corn songs. Trending TikTok topics, on the other hand, can be a little darker than adorable songs about sweetcorn. The split-face diving video is an excellent example of this trend. The vast majority of face-split trend videos follow the same formula. They typically include a blurry screenshot from the original video set to sad or atmospheric music and an explanation of what happens in the video. Some users encourage viewers to click on links in their bios to watch the original video. At the same time, the most popular search within the trend is “face split guy full video,” indicating that the incident piqued many viewers’ interest.
Thankfully, as someone who discovered the video several years ago, it appears that TikTok’s guidelines have prevented the majority of accounts from viewing the clip. However, anyone who regularly uses TikTok knows that the app’s algorithm is quick to ban content it deems inappropriate. As a result, users will frequently misspell words on purpose; for example, ‘die’ may be written as ‘d!3’, or they may state in the video description that an adult uploaded the footage to avoid having their videos automatically removed.
It is unclear whether footage of the split face diving accident was uploaded to TikTok and immediately removed or if users did not upload any footage to avoid being banned from uploading to the app.
As previously stated, this is not the first time the face split diving clip has been discussed online, though many people may need to know how old the clip is. It is believed that the clip first became a viral talking point on Reddit 12 years ago after being uploaded to a blog in October 2009. Despite being 13 years old, very little is known about the face split clip other than the diver is allegedly from Beirut, Lebanon. Some have speculated that the footage was altered or entirely fake, but this has yet to be confirmed, however, why the discussion surrounding the clip appears to have resurfaced on TikTok so long after the incident remains a mystery.
