What Happened With The Wisconsin Volleyball Team?
The Wisconsin Badgers are one of the top varsity volleyball teams in the country. The squad is 13-3 overall, 7-1 in the Big Ten, and rated fifth in the country.
As per the UW Athletics website: “Under [coach Kelly] Sheffield, Wisconsin has won on the NCAA level unrivaled by any other team.
“The Badgers are the only team to advance to the final four the last three seasons in a row and one of only three teams to compete in the Sweet 16 the last nine years in a row.”
Earlier this week, explicit locker room images of members of the University of Wisconsin women’s volleyball team were leaked. The images were taken after the squad won the Big Ten Championship in 2022. The internet has sided with the team’s student-athletes, stating that no pictures should be shared online without the knowledge of individuals in them, and that those who share the images are also to blame.
When Were The Private Photos And Videos Leaked?
On Thursday evening (October 20th), private images and videos of the Wisconsin volleyball team were leaked, barely 24 hours before the team, commonly known as the Badgers, was scheduled to face Michigan State. Despite the uproar and invasion of privacy, the student-athletes won the volleyball game. As is typically the case, photographs and content about the leak began to circulate rapidly online with seemingly little interference from TikTok or Twitter. It is still unknown how the sensitive photographs came to be disseminated online, and police are investigating.
What Was Leaked?
Photos of the women celebrating a national victory in the locker room were released. The images were taken almost a year ago, in December 2021, during the University of Wisconsin women’s volleyball team’s victory over the Nebraska Cornhuskers at the Division I Women’s Volleyball Championship in Columbus, Ohio. Among the leaked photographs were a photo of the team pulling up their sports bras in their locker room and a video of the athletes celebrating their victory.
Netizens Appalled By Leaked Pictures Of Student – Atheletes
Following the athletic department’s statement, netizens expressed their support for the Wisconsin Badgers’ volleyball squad. Twitter has been swamped with criticism of people who uploaded the photographs online, as well as praise for the university’s athletic department for standing up for their students who have been victims of crime. They also chastised individuals who accuse young women of causing the films to be taken in the first place. According to @DLock4MVP, snapping photographs of explicit movies does not imply agreement to their being made public.
