However, Adam Lankford, a criminal justice professor at the University of Alabama, told CNN in 2018 that there are fewer female shooters when it comes to firearm homicides. According to FBI statistics from 2016, 7.6% of murderers were female.

“Research shows that basically males commit more homicides than females, regardless of the subtype of homicide,” Lankford said.

There is no universally accepted definition of mass shootings. According to the Gun Violence Archive, it is defined as an incident in which an offender shoots or kills four or more people. According to the Congressional Research Service, it occurs when a perpetrator kills four or more people at random and attacks in a public place.

Female mass shooters are uncommon in these incidents.
