Yuli Gurriel Injury Update
Yuli Gurriel received a head injury when he ran into Philadelphia Phillies first baseman Rhys Hoskins in the bottom of the seventh inning of game five of the World Series on Thursday at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia. Yuli Gurriel of the Astros left Game 5 of the World Series against the Phillies in the top of the seventh inning on Thursday night after taking a knee to the head. In the eighth inning, Trey Mancini was brought in to pinch-hit for Gurriel. The incident occurred after Gurriel doubled in the seventh and advanced to third. He was caught between third base and home plate while attempting to run home to score another run for the Astros on a ground ball.

The Astros player collapsed during the rundown, and Phillie’s first baseman Rhys Hoskins collided with him, his knee striking the back of his head. Gurriel, who batted.242 this season, had five hits in 16 at-bats entering Thursday night. When Phillie’s third baseman Alec Bohm fired the ball to home plate, Gurriel, who was running on contact, was caught between home and third. Gurriel survived a rundown long enough for McCormick to reach second base. After Hoskins tagged him and tumbled over Gurriel, it appeared that he had taken a shot to the head. Hoskins’ knee appeared to collide with Gurriel’s head.

Gurriel took his time getting up and was seen holding his head in the dugout. However, a chance for Gurriel to stay and play first base in the bottom half of the inning before being pinch-hit in the top of the eighth by Trey Mancini. If the Astros cannot field Gurriel in game six, it will be a major setback for the team, as he has led the team in batting average (.347) this postseason.
