Born Alfred Jesse Smith on July 26, 1941, in Shreveport, Louisiana, Wood’s family relocated to San Pedro, California, during his childhood. He attended San Pedro High School before transferring to Compton High School, where he excelled in track and field. After high school, he enrolled at East Los Angeles College and adopted the stage name Brenton Wood, possibly inspired by the affluent Los Angeles neighborhood of Brentwood. Influenced by musical legends like Jesse Belvin and Sam Cooke, Wood honed his skills as a songwriter and pianist, eventually carving out a niche in the soul and R&B genres.
Wood’s musical career soared in 1967 with the release of “The Oogum Boogum Song,” which reached No. 34 on the Billboard Hot 100. That same year, he achieved even greater success with “Gimme Little Sign,” peaking at No. 9, and “Baby You Got It,” which also reached No. 34.
