What Happened In Broken Arrow Today?
Broken Arrow police and fire officials provided an update to the public on their investigation, which began Thursday after they responded to a burning home where eight bodies were discovered.
“Many details are preliminary due to the nature of the fire that engulfed the home,” Police Chief Brandon Berryhill said.
He stated that the eight bodies belonged to a single family, with children ranging from one year to thirteen. According to a news release, the identities were still being withheld on Friday, though next of kin had been notified.
Berryhill said the adults were being investigated as suspects due to “the nature of where they were found and where the juveniles were found.”
Firefighters from Broken Arrow responded shortly after 4 p.m. Thursday to a reported fire at 425 S. Hickory Ave. in the Meadow Heights neighbourhood. The fire was contained to the rear bedroom, where it began.
“It became obvious to all the fire personnel on scene that this was a crime scene,” Fire Chief Jeremy Moore said. “So once the initial fire was knocked down, our crews moved to preserve the evidence.”

8 Dead In Broken Arrow
The fire is not believed to have killed any victims, though the official causes of death have yet to be determined.
Officials stated that firearms were recovered from the residence.
According to property records, the two adults were discovered in the front yard of the three-bedroom, 980-square-foot house. After the fire was put out, the children were discovered in the back bedroom.
Kris Welch, the property owner, stated that the couple was renting the house from her. They had been Welch’s tenants for the past eight years, according to Welch, who owns several properties in Broken Arrow. Welch said she visited the house occasionally for routine inspections, most recently about a year ago. The occupants appeared to be “a regular family.”
“But I did get some weird vibes from him,” she added. “He wore some T-shirts that were kind of dark and strange. And she was quiet. She hardly ever spoke, honestly. So I always wondered about that.”
Traci Treseler lives a few doors down from the family and has known them for two years. She was overcome with emotion as she recalled the children on Friday.
“I just don’t understand how someone could do that to their babies,” she said.
“They were nice kids, but they always kept to themselves,” Treseler said, adding that she assumed the family only had three children and was surprised to learn there were three more.
Treseler, who has a 4-year-old daughter and a baby, said she invited the kids to her daughter’s birthday party last year. But they said they couldn’t come and turned down the candy gift bags she offered.
“We had some candy left over after the party,” she said. “But they respectfully declined. They said that they couldn’t accept anything from anybody. It came across as a little weird to me at the time. But then I thought maybe it’s just about safety. My mom always taught me that.”

Broken Arrow
According to police, the homicides are the first in Broken Arrow in 2022. Many people in this city remembered the 2015 Broken Arrow case, in which two teen boys stabbed their parents and three siblings to death. Two sisters, ages two and thirteen, survived the attacks and provided crucial testimony in the case. Robert and Michael Bever, brothers, were convicted of the murders and sentenced to prison. Moore thanked authorities for the outpouring of love in the aftermath of Thursday’s events.
“This is an ongoing investigation,” Berryhill added. “Updates will be given as details are confirmed.”
