Phantasy Star Online 2 is a free-to-play online action game in the Phantasy Star Series. PSO2 was developed and published by Sega. The game was a successor to Phantasy Star Online and Phantasy Star Universe. PSO2 features a few of the gameplay elements and also aesthetics reminiscent of previous Phantasy Star games. In July 2012, the first-ever version was released for Windows in Japan. Then, in February 2013, a PlayStation Vita version was released, eventually shut down in September 2020.

The game provides a vast and diversified array of weapon types and playstyles for the user to pick from in Phantasy Star Online 2. In combat, players use a variety of attacks to assault foes in real-time; strikes can be chained for more damage. Combos can be enhanced with powerful spells known as Photon Arts, which require a resource known as Photon Points and basic attacks (PP). In addition, techniques, which are attacks akin to magic but use PP, are available to some classes. When the player employs these attacks, PP is consumed; if the player does not have enough PP, they will be unable to attack with Photon Arts or Techniques; nevertheless, PP spontaneously regenerates or can be actively replenished by attacking foes with regular assaults.
