St Ives Mine Death
A worker had died at an underground mine in Western Australia’s Goldfields region and the company owns the Western Australian gold mine says it would fully cooperate with investigators. It described the incident as a ‘devastating loss.’ On Wednesday, the Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety confirmed a worker had died at the Hamlet underground mine near Kambalda on Tuesday. Worker Killed At Hamlet Underground Gold Mine
A worker lost his life at an underground mine site in Western Australia’s Goldfields. A second contractor was injured in the incident but was released from medical care. WorkSafe mines safety inspectors and WA Police are on-site to investigate the incident. The mining activities were suspended at the site until authorities determine work could safely recommence. So, for now, the mining activities are stopped.
St Ives Gold Mine
The Hamlet mine was part of the St Ives gold operation, which the South African mining giant Gold Fields owns. Stuart Mathews, the Gold Fields executive Australasia vice president, extended his condolences to the loved ones and colleagues of the employee who lost his life.
After a terrible loss, Stuart Mathews said in a statement to 7NEWS, “It is a devastating loss for our close-knit team, especially our underground crew who have a unique camaraderie.”
“Gold Fields’ site emergency response team attended immediately to the incident, and will be commencing an investigation, whilst cooperating fully with the regulatory investigation processes.”
Miner Killed At Underground Gold Mine
So now, a worker lost his life at the Hamlet underground gold mine. Darren Kavanagh, the WorkSafe commissioner, said the regulator was told of the accident on Tuesday.
He said, “WorkSafe Mines safety inspectors and WA Police are on site and are investigating the incident. We are unable to provide further information at this time as the inspectors’ enquiries are ongoing.”

The St Ives incident is the 3rd fatal tragedy in WA’s mining sector in fourteen months. David Armstrong died in October 2021 when the ground collapsed underneath him while doing his duty at a mine at Fortescue Metal Group’s Solomon Hub. A worker at Sino Iron died in September 2021.
