Toyokazu Shibata played soft-tip darts at the beginning of his career. In 2017 he reached the quarter-finals of the Japanese qualifier for the PDC World Darts Championship 2017. In November 2021 he was able to win the Japanese qualifier and thus qualified for the PDC World Darts Championship 2022.

He showed himself to be a promising talent to watch, averaging 95.42 in the final and 70 percent on his doubles, for an overall tournament average of 90.72.

On his world championship debut, Shibata will face Welshman Lewis Williams.
