Two Officers Shot In Innisfil

A police officer who worked with outreach and mental health teams and a constable who was a trained crisis negotiator were identified Wednesday as the police officers who died after a shooting in Innisfil, Ontario, an event that left residents of the community in shock. The South Simcoe Police Service revealed the officers had responded to a disturbance around 8 p.m. Tuesday at home in the town north of Toronto when the shooting occurred.

The Special Investigations Unit revealed the South Simcoe police officers died in hospital and a man died at home after an exchange of gunfire in Innisfil, Ontario, Tuesday night.

A vigil was held at the Innisfil Community Church Wednesday night to honour the officers’ lives. Lead pastor Steve Bradley said, “We want to be able to bring the community together so the healing process can begin.”

“We know it’s going to be a long journey, and we know we don’t have the answers for why things like this happen, but what we do have is community and we can help provide that in a tangible way, like opening our up our doors.”

President of the Police Association of Ontario, Mark Baxter, said the police officers’ death had sent shockwaves through the policing community. Mark said, “It’s a tremendous loss for our entire policing family.” He added that 

they might really never understand or know the ‘why’, but hopefully, investigators could get some more information and some more background that maybe could give the families and the officers’ colleagues some closure.

Residents in the area expressed shock at the incident that recently happened. They said an aged couple who had an adult grandson lived in the house where the shooting occurred.

The SIU said it would not be releasing the identity of the suspect at this time without permission from his family. But, the Toronto Star and The Canadian Press reported a “source close to the investigation” has recognised the suspect as Christopher Doncaster. The news is not confirmed.
