Cesar Chavez was born in Yuma, Arizona, in a Mexican-American family of six children to his parents, Librado and Juana Estrada Chávez. Chavez started working as a manual laborer before working for two years in the United States Navy. Chavez’s parents owned a ranch and a small grocery store, and they were kicked off their land for failing to pay its taxes, and they lost everything during the Great Depression in the 1930s. To survive, their family became migrant farm workers, traveling around California to find work and faced several problems while settling as migrant farm workers. He quit school in 1942, in 7th grade, because he wanted to help his mother in the fields. In 1948, he married a woman who also was from a family of migrant farm workers.
