The 43-year-old Montenegrin was detained on Sunday night as he attempted to board a plane out of Miami, according to a news release from the DOJ.

According to court documents, Gogic has been charged with three charges of breaking the Maritime Drug Law Enforcement Act and one count of conspiring to break the law. According to the DOJ, he would be subject to a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years in prison and a maximum life term behind bars if found guilty. Oran Gogic, a former professional boxer, is accused by the Department of Justice of smuggling more than 20 tonnes of cocaine through American ports, with a market value of more than $1 billion. According to a statement from the Department of Justice, a grand jury in New York indicted Gogic, who was arrested on Sunday.

Prosecutors called the seizure “one of the largest drug seizures in United States history.”

Former Boxer Charged With Drug Trafficking

The amounts of cocaine that Gogic and his co-conspirators allegedly tried to move were “staggering,” according to Breon Peace, US Attorney for the Eastern District of New York, and totalled more than 20 tonnes. According to the DOJ and court documents, Gogic allegedly “conspired with others to distribute massive quantities of cocaine” sourced from Colombia to Europe on commercial cargo ships loaded in the US between May 2018 and July 2019.

According to the DOJ, three shipments of cocaine were seized.

The largest of the three seizures occurred on June 19, 2019, at the Port of Philadelphia, when nearly 20 tonnes of cocaine were discovered hidden on the MSC Gayane.

According to the DOJ, it was “one of the largest cocaine seizures in US history,” worth more than $1 billion.

Goran Gogic Arrested

Gogic’s lawyer, Lawrence Hashish, told CNN that his client was detained after appearing in federal court in Miami on Monday and that the charges caught him off guard. He added that Gogic maintained his innocence and had come to the United States for a boxing convention in Puerto Rico.

Hashish also stated that Gogic’s detention hearing in Miami federal court is scheduled for November 7. Still, the date is subject to change because Gogic is currently quarantined in the detention centre.

CNN contacted the Montenegrin Consulate in New York for comment.

According to BoxRec, Gogic’s boxing career lasted 11 years, from 2001 to 2012. He finished his career with 21 wins, four losses, and two draws.
