Coolio, whose real name is Artis Leon Ivey Jr., was born in Pennsylvania in the south of Pittsburgh in August 1963. He was born to Jackie Slater, a factory worker, and Artis Ivey Sr. At the age of 11, he moved to Compton, a tough and gang-ridden area in Los Angeles. His performances on the local stages during his young age got him the nickname “Coolio Iglesias,” named after the Spanish singer Julio, later shortened to Coolio. He also worked as security at Los Angeles International Airport before becoming a full-time rapper. His first album, “Whatcha Gonna Do?” was released in 1987. However, Coolio’s door to fortunes opened after the release of his album “It Takes A Thief,” signing with Tommy Boy Records in 1944.
The greatest hit of Coolio was “Gangsta’s Paradise” in 1995, featuring R&B singer L.V for the film “The Dangerous Minds.” This track topped the Billboard Top 100 for three weeks and is one of the most enduring songs of all time. It won the Grammy award for best rap solo performance in the year 1996. Coolio has traveled to many countries and worked on several Hollywood films. His most recent work was the online Cookin’ with Coolio series, supported by the book and advertised by appearances on various celebrity cooking shows.
